The highlight of 2024 was the launch of a new exhibit. Dr. Bernard Means and I co-curated The Founding Fossils exhibit at the Peale Museum. Founding Fossils explains the surprising role that archaeology played in the understanding of species extinction in America as the United States became an independent country.
We designed the Founding Fossils Exhibit to be accessible allowing visitors to explore the art in multisensory ways. Most of the framed pictures are associated with tactile media–3D-printed replicas of fossil bones, and sculptures of significant people and objects pictured in the exhibit. Labels were posted in braille and print, and there are QR-codes leading to an audio tour.
I gave exhibit tours for some of my friends who are blind. As they touched the 3D-printed replicas, they made observations about the characteristics of the people and the animals shown in the exhibit. The tactile elements allowed them to actively engage with exhibit content.
Upon request, I have provided tours to sighted visitors including staff of museums around Baltimore. I hope that I inspired them to create accessible and multisensory experiences for all of their visitors. I am available to consult if the seeds of inspiration sprout into project ideas.
In 2025, I will begin work planning another exhibit at The Peale Museum. I am identifying local artists who want their work to be touched.
